Seattle Jewish Day School Secures $3.5 Million Property

SEATTLE, WA -- (July 21, 2009)

Staff Writer

(lubavitch.com) A Jewish day school near the University of Washington has left the Chabad center it has called home for the last 35 years, for a bigger and greener learning environment.

“We’re going to move from having skinned knees to having grass stains,” said Rabbi Yossi Charytan, head of the Menachem Mendel Seattle Cheder Day School.

MMSC frantically assembled more than $3 million in pledges and loans in less than two months. Board members raced to the finish line breathlessly on Monday, when they closed on the new Maple Leaf property that will allow them relocate from the grassless school grounds it has outgrown.

The independent school, which operated rent-free on “Frat Row” in Seattle’s University District, was told in February that Chabad would lease its building the following school year to a Jewish fraternity.

“Sometimes something seemingly unfortunate has to happen to get a good thing finally to come,” said Mihal Ehven, a parent with four children enrolled at MMSC.

Founded by Mrs. Chanie Levitin in 1974, the school, which offers a mix of Jewish and secular education for Jewish students of all denominations, searched the area for a new site.

“We were initially looking for buildings that were empty because of the recession, that we could move into rent free and be there while the developer waited to develop the property,” said Tziviah Goldberg, an MMSC board member.

I would like to personally thank all the volunteers who helped clear old furniture from our new facility this past Sunday.  It was great having the support of so many parents and community members.  Special mention is due to the Rifkin and Voluck families for sponsoring the refreshments and childcare.

Here are some pictures to enjoy:

Boruch Shehecheyonu Vekiyimonu Vehegionu Lazman Hazeh!

Blessed are You who has… enabled us to reach this moment!

We are pleased to inform the community that with the help of Hashem MMSC is moving to a new campus for the 09-10 school year. Today we have removed the contingency in our Purchase and Sale Agreement that will allow us to purchase our new school campus!  BE”H we will close on July 20th.

 MMSC New Site.jpg

The new campus is located on 1.6 acres adjacent to the Maple Leaf Playground and Reservoir at 8511 15th Ave NE.  Set back from a small forest of hundred foot firs that line the property front is a quaint three story school building.  Plans call for an expanded early childhood facility that will house our Montessori style program and large classrooms for our elementary and high school.  The architects are busy figuring out how to configure the building to include the ideal classroom, lunchroom and gym space to meet our needs – within a reasonable budget.  Our new home will have generous areas for outdoor play and fresh air, ample parking and easy access from I5 (only two lights), so parents who travel from areas outside Seattle’s north end will have an easy commute.

Many thanks is due to the building committee for pulling this together and a big yasher koach to Samis Foundation for supporting the financial aspects of the purchase.  Many thanks is also due to the donors who have stepped forward in our silent campaign.  We could not have done it without all of you.

Other news will be forthcoming as to how parents and community members can participate in the rest of the capital campaign.
